Remember the classic 1969 American film They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? Directed by Sydney Pollack, with a screenplay by Robert E. Thompson and James Poe, the film is based on Horace McCoy’s 1935 novel of the same name. It stars Jane Fonda, Michael Sarrazin, Susannah York, Gig Young, Bonnie Bedelia, and Red Buttons. The story centers on a group of desperate individuals competing in a grueling Depression-era dance marathon, spurred on by an opportunistic emcee. The clip above is from present-day Lvov in western Ukraine, and the poor horse is a fitting representation of today’s Ukraine. The parallel with the film is both ironic and striking!
