Japan began to release treated radioactive water from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean on August 24 afternoon. The move marks a key step in the arduous process of decommissioning the plant but Japan has drawn criticism for it from activists, the fishing industry and neighbors, especially China, who issued a blanket ban on all seafood from Japan. The plant was destroyed in 2011 when powerful tsunami waves caused three reactor meltdowns. China has been one of the fiercest critics of the release, and on Thursday once again voiced strong opposition to Japan’s decision, with its foreign ministry saying quote: “The Japanese side should not cause secondary harm to the local people and even the people of the world out of its own selfish interests.“ Tokyo has in turn criticized China for spreading “scientifically unfounded claims.“ #japan #fukushima #china #pacific #pacificocean #worldnews #nuclearplant #radioactive #wastewater n18oc_world n18oc_crux 0:00 INTRODUCTION 2:15 WHY IS THE WATER RELEASE BEING OPPOSED? 4:59 “OCEAN IS NOT JAPAN'S PROPERTY” 5:59 BEIJING CALLS IT “SELFISH & IRRESPONSIBLE ACT” CRUX is your daily video news guide to the big events that are shaping our world.
