HOLLYWEEN Playlist Link: Lantern leaves SILLY Videos: The depths of the earth are an unforgiving place, and Hollyleaf was unfortunate enough to get trapped there. She discovers hope of escape when a curious (and timid) spirit, Fallen Leaves, offers to be her guide. He has the power to glow, providing Hollyleaf with the light she needs to navigate the tunnels. This power isn’t unlimited. Fallen Leaves’ whiskers burn up the more he uses it. When the two get separated in the tunnels, Fallen Leaves uses up his whiskers in an attempt to find Hollyleaf. The drawings on the wall come to life, reflecting the spirit’s panic. Hollyleaf is more calm when lost, working gradually through the tunnels in search of her guide. Hollyleaf finds Fallen Leaves when he’s used up all his lights and fading away. Fallen Leaves comes to peace in his final moments now that he’s reunited with his friend. Perhaps they would’ve been able to escape together if Hollyleaf searched faster, or if Fallen leaves rationed his lights out more. “It’s a tragedy.” - Hermes, Hadestown -------------------- The project was conceptualized on November 12th when I was listening to “Doubt Comes In“ during my Digital Media class. It's a song that makes me emotional each time. I've learned a lot from the MAPs I've been hosting and it felt appropriate to use Hollyleaf and Fallen Leaves for the narrative of Eurydice and Orpheus (... again). Although Eurydice is the one we lose in the original myth, I felt this version of the story worked better if it was Fallen Leaves who passed on. Pre-production started in June/July of 2022 and I'm grateful my friends were enthusiastic to help. A lot of changes happened to the story and art direction, but a theme that remained constant was love and light. Fallen Leaves inspires Hollyleaf to gain confidence and acts as a beacon of hope. It was a pleasure to work with all of the participants. I met a lot of artists and they truly gave the project their all.
