Migrants arriving via the Channel have been quietly granted the right to work in various sectors such as care, construction, and agriculture. This is part of a Home Office scheme that also allows them to maintain access to state-subsidised accommodation. Under Freedom of Information (FOI) laws, data reveals that nearly 16,000 asylum seekers, including those who crossed the Channel in small boats, have been permitted to work in a single year. They are engaged in occupations facing staff shortages, receiving 80% of the standard pay rate. To retain this allowance, migrants give up their £ weekly state subsistence allowance if their earnings surpass that amount. Additionally, they can discuss staying in asylum accommodation by contributing to the cost. Peter Cardwell speaks with Ben Harris-Quinney, Chair of The Bow Group. #news #politics #uk #migrants #asylum #talktv #talkradio
