Goombay Dance Band is a German band formed in 1979 by Oliver Bendt, named after a small bay in the Caribbean, in Saint Lucia. Their music has a distinctive sound (somewhat reminiscent of Boney M), with an admixture of juice, calypso and Western popular music. The band was a huge commercial success in the early 1980s, appearing with such hits as: “Sun of Jamaica“ (The Sun of Jamaica), “Seven Tears“ (Seven Tears) and “Aloha-Oe, Until We Meet Again“. The Goombay Dance Band gained fans all over Europe, and soon it became very popular in South Africa, where it entered the charts with the songs “Sun of Jamaica“ and “Aloha-Oe“.
