I recently picked up an Angry Charlie distortion pedal from JHS. It's a Marshall in a Box. I believe it is his take on a JCM 800. When I got it, I was really surprised at how the tone conjured up memories of Randy Rhoads. He was the guitarist who really got me interested in learning to play the guitar. (Angus was the first) So I recorded this tribute/backing track to an awesome guitarist who was taken from us way too soon. The song is an excellent demonstration of the different colors of modes. The song kind of takes you on a journey through some different modes with B as the tonal center. The verse is in B Mixolydian, the Pre-Chorus is in B Natural Minor, then the Chorus is in B Dorian Minor, the solo is in F# Natural minor and the outro solo is in B Dorian Minor. Very creative songwriting on this one in my opinion. I tried to highlight each specific mode in each section to make it easy to solo over as a backing track. I listed each mode's parent scale to (maybe) make it easier. For example B Dorian Minor is the second mode of A Major. That makes A Major the parent scale of B Dorian Minor. For fun, try to emulate Ozzy's vocal melody with your guitar on the verses! For the guitar gear nerds who care about this stuff... I used an Angry Charlie for the distortion. It was run through a Focusrite Scarlett interface into Scuffham S-Gear Software. I used a Fender amp sim for the base sound (clean sounds and the dirty sounds with the Angry Charlie). Other effects used - Boss Dimension C Waza and Eventide MicroPitch for the clean verse. For some of the droney background parts, I used an Electo-Harmonix Freeze, Strymon Flint, and Meris Polymoon. I created the “bass“ line with my guitar but then just dropped it an octave with a post production plug-in. The drums were programmed with MT Power Drum Kit. I'm still working on building my skills in programming drum beats. I plan to continue uploading more backing tracks as time permits but I don't always have time for the creative endeavors. Hope you enjoy it. Please like and subscribe!
