Iwan Fals - Bento In May 1998, follow economic decline, growing opposition to Suharto and his “New Order“ government that had been in power for over 30 years and the shooting of protesters at a Jakarta university, cities across the country rose up in some of the worst rioting South East Asia has ever seen. Over only a few days, millions of dollars of damage would be done and thousands would die. Interestingly, the rioting was acompanied by a complete collapse of military and police chain of command. In some cities, the security forces enforced the governments orders, but in other the police only stepped in to protect businesses and their owners, mostly ethnic Chinese being attacked and let protests continue and in others they stood by and let the riots run their course.
