Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson relayed on Monday that Alberta and B.C. were forecasted to see “well-above average” levels of wildfire activity for August. He added that parts of the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Saskatchewan were also anticipated to see the majority of wildfires this month. According to Wilkinson, there are currently 474 active wildfires being responded to and that 3.4 million hectares have already burned across the country so far this year — a figure that is above the 25-year average. “Last summer, Canadians experienced the most destructive forest fire season in our country's history. And just a few weeks ago, we all saw the devastating images out of Jasper, and we mourned the loss of a firefighter who sacrificed his life battling this wildfire,” Wilkinson said. “While wildfire season often winds down at the end of August or early September, this data points to longer and more extreme fire seasons. Area burned by fires is growing, this is pushing what we consider normal to a whole different level,” he added.
