In a rare incident of aerial combat, a Russian Marine sniper managed to shoot down a Ukrainian Su-25 attack aircraft from the ground using an Igla man-portable air defense system (MANPADS) over the town of Vuhledar in the Donetsk region. According to sources from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), the sniper belonged to a special unit of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and was deployed in the area to provide anti-aircraft cover for the separatist forces. The sniper reportedly used a thermal sight to detect and track the Ukrainian jet, which was flying at low altitude and conducting a reconnaissance mission. The Igla MANPADS, which was developed by the Soviet Union in the 1970s, is guided by infrared homing and has a maximum range of 5.2 kilometers and a maximum altitude of 3.5 kilometers.
