Elon Musk Says Pentagon Requested Taking Over Starship Mission! Instead of contracting SpaceX to launch payloads, the Pentagon has made contact with the business to discuss the possibility of taking over Starship for missions that could be sensitive and risky as a government-owned and -operated asset At the Space Mobility Conference held on January 30, Gary Henry, a senior consultant with SpaceX, informed the audience that the business has been considering its options for responding. The capability to design and demonstrate a proof of concept for a single upper stage completely reusable SpaceX Starship that can deliver cargo anywhere on Earth in less than an hour has been sponsored by the Pentagon. A total of around $150 million was raised through two fundings. The current conversations call for a more comprehensive effort. The initial attempt can be compared to hiring Boeing to demonstrate that it could use just one 787 to make a single delivery. The first new possibility might be for the military to seize complete operational command of SpaceX Starships while they were conducting a covert operation. The DOD-owned reusable rockets would be used for covert missions, and the activities would be manned by military personnel. The Starship would be brought back to SpaceX if it made it out unscathed. At some point, buying several SpaceX Starships and booster rockets would be another option. The military would also need to build a large number of Mechazilla launch towers. The reusable rockets held by the DOD would be used for covert missions, with military personnel managing the activities. It would not be possible to compare the costs of completely reusable Super Heavy Starships or fully reusable Starships with the costs of SpaceX Falcon 9 missions that are expended. The first-stage booster of SpaceX Falcon 9 has been reused roughly 20 times. With a new maintenance and certification plan, this will be expanded to 40 reuses. It is anticipated that boosters for the Falcon 9 will be reusable at least 100 times. This assures that Starship and Super Heavy boosters can be utilized at least a hundred times. According to Col. Eric Felt, director of space architecture for the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration, there are some operational concepts that might apply to a spacecraft that is owned and run by the government. Military transport aircraft, such as the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, are used to move soldiers, vehicles, and equipment. With a maximum payload capacity of approximately 85 tons, C-17s are priced at roughly $326 million each.
