At the Estadio Nacional in Santiago earlier this month, One Tree Hill was dedicated to Victor Jara, Chile’s great poet, theatre director and political activist. Jara was arrested, tortured and shot dead during the 1973 military coup in the country. Bono also dedicated the performance to Rene Castro, attending the show with his family. It was here, during the military coup, that Rene, along with thousands of others, suffered at the hands of General Pinochet’s troops, when the stadium for eight weeks was turned into a prison camp.
