Drawing on a collection of old textbooks and training manuals, Scott Thornberry discusses the history of language teaching methods, both to critique it, and to draw some lessons from past practices. In this lecture, sponsored by the MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at The New School (), he will also show how methods can be described in terms of certain key parameters, and address the question as to whether “Dogme ELT“ (a new kid on the block) is in fact a method. Scott Thornbury, associate professor in The New School MA TESOL program, is a prolific writer of books and articles for teachers and students and a tireless presenter at international ELT conference. He is author of Natural Grammar and Grammar (in the Oxford Resource Books for Teachers series) with Oxford University Press.
