Wolfgang Alexander Albert Eduard Maximilian Reichsgraf Berghe von Trips, was born in Cologne, Germany 4 May 1928. The 1961 Italian Grand Prix on 10 September could have been the culmination of von Trips' career, as a third place would have been sufficient to secure the Formula One World Drivers Championship that year. At the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, his Ferrari collided with Jim Clark's Lotus. His car became airborne and crashed into the crowd, killing 14 spectators. Von Trips also died, leaving team-mate Phil Hill to clinch a bitter world title. At the beginning of the sixties German Ferrari driver Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips had been the idol of a whole Generation. Von Trips, born in 1928, had not been involved in the system of the Nazis, because he had been much too sick. In the fifties he had been the first German sportsman being internationally respected.
