After London’s High Court ruled that Julian Assange can appeal an extradition order by the U.S. on Tuesday, the WikiLeaks founder’s wife urged the Biden administration to “drop this shameful case” altogether. “Today's decision is astounding,” Stella Assange told reporters. “The courts recognize that Julian is exposed to a flagrant denial of his freedom of expression rights, that he is being discriminated against … and that he remains exposed to the death penalty,“ she added. Assange, 52, has been in England’s Belmarsh Prison since April 2019. For years, U.S. prosecutors have been seeking to put him on trial on 18 counts — all but one of which fall under the Espionage Act — after a high-profile WikiLeaks release of confidential U.S. military records and diplomatic cables. Assange will be granted permission to appeal the delayed extradition unless the U.S. promises he will not face the death penalty. A further hearing has been scheduled for May 20.
