City workers dug a trench some 25 meters (yards) long at one of the city’s old cemeteries and made the sign of the cross as they pushed bodies wrapped in carpets or bags over the edge. The communal grave was opened on Tuesday, and so far some 70 bodies have been placed in the ground. About 1,200 people have died in the nine-day siege of the city of 430,000 people on the Sea of Azov, Zelenskyy’s office said. Not all of the dead buried here were killed in the fighting. Some died at home from natural causes, but authorities were unable to arrange for the collection of the bodies for their burial until now. An AP reporter present estimated around half of those in the grave had died from the intense shelling the city has experienced. AP journalists in Mariupol said there had been at least 8 major airstrikes on the city in the past 48 hours, with the fire department centre one of the latest to be hit. Residents of the city were staying in their shelters for the most part, and temperatures dipped to -9C (15.8 Fahrenheit) overnight.
