Ukraine fails to fulfill its obligations to eliminate anti-personnel mines. Kiev has been urged to destroy them, but only within a 10-year timeframe. At a conference in Geneva, the Ottawa Convention signatories insisted that Kiev should destroy its entire stockpile of anti-personnel mines within the next ten years. As follows from the materials presented at the conference, Kiev has about two million PFM-1 “Lepestok“ in stock. Ukraine ratified the convention back in 2005 but it is still actively using the weapons while “strongly condemning“ them at the same time. Theoe international conventions: you know, you don’t have to honor them if you fight on the side of the West. Well, the Ukrainian armed forces are indeed systematically “eliminating“ the mines - by dotting entire residential areas with them. Tragic civilian casualties caused by Lepestok anti-personnel mines happen regularly in the frontline regions. For example, in September a man lost his limbs in Gorlovka.
