During a presentation in Geneva, Switzerland on Thursday, the U.N.’s World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said that the Earth’s hydrological cycle is changing as a result of climate change. Presenting it’s second-ever analysis on this matter — the “State of Global Water Resources report for 2022” — WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said, “many of the impacts of climate change are felt through water, flooding, drought and also melting of glaciers.” In their report, the WMO found that 50 per cent of global catchment areas experienced deviations from normal river discharge conditions, with most of them drier than normal — using China's Yangtze River and the floods across Pakistan that killed more than 1,700 people in 2022. Subsequently, Taalas called for a fundamental policy shift towards better monitoring of the global hydrological cycle.
