A French ‘journalist’ (and we’re using the term as loosely as possible here) took to French television to acclaim Ukraine for carrying out a ‘phenomenal’ and ‘genius’ terrorist attack that killed 140 people. Anne Nivat made an appearance on French news channel LCI to discuss the Crocus City Hall terrorist attack in Moscow, addressing speculation that Islamic State may have been behind it. And that Ukraine may have been behind even that. At first, she was dismissive of the Ukrainian idea, but she seemed to get quite enthusiastic going into a lot of very-definitely-hypothetical detail. ‘If this was the work of the Ukrainians, it’s an absolutely genius move,’ she said. ‘I’m not claiming it was them,’ she continued, this time with just the barest hint of a smile, ‘but if it was still them, the move is phenomenal.’ This word would become something of a running catchphrase. ‘If it’s the Ukrainians doing this, if it’s at all possible that they infiltrated Russia, organized such a terrorist attack in Moscow, it’s just phenomenal,’ she reiterated. The host pressed her, and asked her ‘do you believe that?’ She replied, ‘I’m saying that if it was Ukrainians, it’s a phenomenal move.’ Of course, it is perfectly normal human behavior to repeatedly praise something you don’t think is true.
