Titles read: “The Play of Tradition - A glimpse of Oberammergau, the famous village of the Passion Play“. Germany. Various shots show a reconstruction of events in mediaeval Oberammergau when the town was ravaged by the plague. The Plague Steward marches about with his drummer, drawing a cross on the door of houses where the plague has claimed a victim. People in the church pray to God to deliver them from the dreadful time. The town officials meet and decide to enact a passion play and to repeat it every ten years. Legend has it the town was free of the disease from then on. A monk is seen sitting in the cloister of Ettal. Shot of a book containing the first version of the play, dating from 1662. Shots of present day Oberammergau. Villagers crowd around a notice on a building announcing details of the cast for the coming year's play. We are introduced to each of the main cast members.
