Enter: Travis Miller. Miller spent a majority of his teenage years and early 20s basically trying out any and every genre he could. Punk, industrial, ambient, hip-hop, metal; you name the style, and you can probably find a song online where that style has been attempted by this gentleman. We are properly in the 2020s now, and I think that this decade is going to be ripe with rappers plumbing the depths of trauma in their music. And I don’t mean like in the Logic “Yo, who can relate?” sort of way. Lil Ugly Mane wasn’t the only one doing it in the 2010s, of course, with artists like Death Grips, Danny Brown, and Cage all painting equally harrowing portraits in their works. Lately, recent albums by Open Mike Eagle, Backxwash, and Homeboy Sandman have trod similar territory. But, the fact still remains, there has never been a rapper more morose and lugubrious than Ugly.
