On March 7, 1945 at 1 p.m a small vanguard of the 9th US Armored Division, led by the 22-year-old lieutenant Karl H. Timmermann, reached the completely intact bridge of Remagen (Germany). Surprised, he immediately informed General William M. Hoge, Commanding Officer of Combat Group B of the 9th US Armored Division, about the operational bridge. The latter ordered the immediate attack.
