The Dancing Crane company has been the prominent New York organization for the Georgian performance arts of dance, music and theater since 1997. Their Georgian Cultural Center includes many classes for children in dance, music, language, theater and more. Today, they will present regional dances of Georgia in various regional costumes. Dances are known by the region of their origin, such as Acharuli (Ajaria), Kazbeguri (Kazbegi), Mtiuluri (Mtiuleti), and so forth. There is a formal technique, with details of leg and foot work, upper body posture and movement, hand and arm gestures and movements. ABOUT FOLK FEET In 2004, former Brooklyn Arts Council Folk Arts director, Dr. Kay Turner, called traditional dance “one of the least served areas in the arts in the United States.” In order to remedy the situation, she began Folk Feet, an initiative that documented and presented Brooklyn traditional dance forms through teaching workshops and public showcases.
