I. About Sexagenary Cycle and Chinese Zodiac The Chinese sexagenary cycle is an ancient counting system that is still used to record the Chinese calendar. As shown in the diagram below, the inner ring has 10 elements (heavenly stems 天干), and the outer ring has 12 elements (earthly branches 地支), which represents the Chinese zodiac. Every year the inner ring and outer ring rotate one step clockwise, for a total of 60 combinations. Here is a very handy online tool: Ten (10) Heavenly Stems (the end digit of birth year) 甲 乙 丙 丁 戊 己 庚 辛 壬 癸 Jia Yi Bing Ding Wu Ji Geng Xing Ren Gui 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 1 2 3 逢4必甲:Jia=4, e.g., 1964, 1974, 1984. 依次推算1962→ 壬(Ren). *For those who are born in January or before Fab 4, same as previous year. Twelve (12) Earthly Branches
