Pro-Russian separatists in the breakaway Moldovan region of Transnistria have appealed to Moscow for “protection“. Moldova rejected the “propaganda statements“ and said Transnistria “benefits from peace, security and economic integration“ with the EU. Transnistria convened a special congress – only the seventh in its history– amid a deepening dispute with Moldova over customs duties. Earlier, Moldova President Maia Sandu said that Moldolva could press ahead with its bid to join the EU without Transnistria. Russia’s Foreign Ministry said that “protecting the interests of the residents of Transnistria, our compatriots, is one of our priorities”.
