Il Volo (“the flight“ in Italian) is a trio of Italian pop-opera singers. Il Volo consists of three male singers: Piero Barone, born June 24, 1993, Ignazio Boschetto, born October 4, 1994 and Gianluca Ginoble, born February 11, 1995. They got their start in 2009 when they met on an the Italian RAI TV music competition show “Ti Lascio Una Canzone“, which was held in Sanremo on the Italian Riviera. “Ti lascio una canzone“ (English: Leavin' you a song) is an Italian musical variety show TV show (2008--present) that includes a competition between the most beloved songs in the history of Italian pop music. The songs, which represent the true stars of the show, are “golden oldies“. They are symbolically “left“ for us, in what amounts to a musical heritage, to be interpreted by the singers of tomorrow, in order to ensure that the melodies and lyrics which have provided the background music to past generations are not lost. The songs are performed by young singing talents, who interpret the best loved songs of Italian pop music during each broadcast. The winner of that show was then 14 year old Gianluca Ginoble from Roseto degli Abruzzo, which is on the Italian peninsula coast opposite to Rome (on the Adriatic coast). Gianluca won the competition in May of 2009 for his singing of his idol, Andrea Bocelli's song “La Luna Che Non C'e“. In the competition with Gianluca Ginoble, were Piero Barone (15) from Agrigento Sicily and Ignazio Boschetto (14), originally from Sicily but living in Bologna in northern Italy. There were also many other young male and female singers from all over Italy in the competition. The 3 young men were among the best of the male singers, and were chosen to perform a song as a trio. The song chosen for them was the 1898 composed Neapolitan favorite O Sole Mio, and it was received to much acclaim by Italian TV viewers. After the competition the 3 young tenors sang together under the name The Tryo, later Il Trio, and finally Il Volo. In 2010 the trio sang also in the chorus of We Are the World 25 for Haiti, remake of the 1985 hit song We Are the World.
