After France's defeat at Cerignola and Garigliano, Louis XII and Ferdinad II agree that Naples is to become part of Spain, and France could keep Milan. Rome has a new pope, Julius II. He was the arch enemy of Alexander VI, therefore he begins his reign by reconquering the domains of Cesare Borgia. But there is a problem. Venice acquired part of the Papal States. Julius begins to plot against Venice using territorial claims of France, the Holy Roman Empire and Spain against them. In 1508 Louis XII, Maximilian I, Ferdinand II and the pope form the League of Cambrai and agree to jointly attack Venice. In 1509 the French cross the River Adda and defeat the Venetian army commanded by Niccolo di Pitigliano and Bartolomeo d'Alviano at the Battle of Agnadello.
