From its earliest days, Hradec was the location of one of the main strongholds of the Golęszyce Slavic tribe living in today’s Polish-Czech borderland, between the source of the Oder and Vistula rivers (listed as Gradice Golenzicezke in 1155). According to legend, the wedding procession of Czech princess Dobrawa and the procession of Mieszko I met in Hradec. Between 990 - 1032, the castle belonged to the state of Boleslaw the Brave and Mieszko II.
