Daniel Belasco, Executive Director of the Al Held Foundation, explores the artist’s monumental exhibition ‘Al Held: About Space’ at White Cube Bermondsey (2024). Bringing together masterworks from across the artist’s five-decade career, the selection reveals the extent to which Held realised novel modes of form, space and colour in painting through a combination of hard-edged geometry and spontaneous gestural expression. ‘These are optimistic paintings.
