Jacob Raichman was Principal trombonist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1927 - 1955. Raichman was born in Russia and first studied music with his father, a well known conductor of band music. Raichman went to St. Petersburg (Leningrad) when he was 11 years old to study under a music scholarship as an exceptionally gifted student. He later graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music with highest honors. After graduation he played trombone in the Symphony Orchestra of the Imperial Music Society and in the Theater of Music Drama. In 1920, he won a competition among 22 notable musicians to play fiest trombone at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Raichman left Russia in 1926 to participate in concert toursin Europe and later in Cuba, where he played with the Havana Philharmonic. Raichman arrived in the US in 1927, where he was engaged by Serge Koussevitzky, then conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, to play first trombone. Mr Raichman retired in 1955. Jacob A.
