The scare is over in the Eastern US where birds started mysteriously falling ill and dying earlier this summer. Turns out, the phenomenon was related to the emergence of 17-year cicadas. The cicadas were being sprayed with pesticides and then were eaten by the birds, who became ill from ingesting the pesticides themselves. Now that the cicadas are gone, the number of diseased birds found has decreased sharply. There was never anything contagious.
