PHASA-35, a 35m wingspan solar-electric aircraft successfully completed a stratospheric flight trial and soared to more than 66,000 feet before landing successfully. The High Altitude Long Endurance, Uncrewed Aerial System’s successful flight enables our engineers to assess the performance of the experimental solar-electric drone within the outer-reaches of the planet’s atmosphere. Designed to operate unmanned in the stratosphere, above the weather and conventional air traffic, PHASA-35 offers a persistent and affordable alternative to satellites combined with the flexibility of an aircraft, which could be used for a range of valuable applications including forest fire detection and maritime surveillance.
