A BRITISH TAR

Show: . PINAFORE Song: “A British tar“ Performance: Sept 16, 2012 matinee performance Ralph Rackstraw is in love with Josephine. But she is his Captain's daughter. One of Ralph''s shipmates, Dick Deadeye, has reminded Ralph that he is but a lowly seaman and well below her class, so his love for her can never be. But Bill Bobstay (Boatswains Mate) and the rest of the Ralph's shipmates urge him to pursue Josephine. In support of that he is reminded by them that Sir Joseph Porter, Commander of the Queens Navy, has himself said that a British tar is any man's equal (excepting his, of course). In fact, in celebration of that, Sir Joseph has composed a song for them. Dick Deadeye pooh-pooh's that notion and reminds him again of the folly his love for Josephine.
