Their main interest in Niger is safeguarding their $500-million military investment in the country, democracy is an afterthought. And what democracy could they mean when Nigeriens overwhelmingly support the coup that has just taken place? The Pentagon and CIA operate various military installations across Niger, such as drone bases. Working with the French, they have conducted reconnaissance and strike operations in places as far as southwestern Libya. But despite ramping up their military presence in the Sahel, insecurity has worsened. Around 7,900 people died from terror attacks in 2022 - that’s up from just 30 in 2003. Meanwhile, America’s drone and airstrike programme kills the innocent (the US calls it collateral damage). According to the American newspaper, the Washington Post, between 4.5 million to 4.6 million people have died since the War on Terror began after 9/11. In recent years the war on terror has migrated to Africa, with the Sahel becoming the latest battleground with many citizens in places like Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger feeling like the Western approach to security is not working for the people and might have actually worsened the situation. On top of that, the economic destitution perpetuated by exploitative relations with France creates a hotbed for terrorist recruitment. While France benefits from extracting the resources of Niger, it remains one of the world’s poorest countries. It’s a lose-lose situation for the West African state.
