The work, subtitled a “prelude-cantata“, consists mostly of a long and highly pictorial orchestral overture that depicts the sea voyage from Homer's Odyssey: Ulysses, thrown by Poseidon into the sea, is protected by the veil of the goddess Leucothea, daughter of Cadmus.
