Massada is a Dutch-Moluccan band from Huizen founded by singer / percussionist Johnny Manuhutu. The band scored hits in the 70s and 80s of the 20th century with ’Latin dance’, ’Arumbai’ and ’Sajang é’. The band started out as The Eagles in the 1960s and played mainly at Moluccan parties. When the American Eagles started to score hits in the Netherlands, the group name was changed to Massada (a citadel in Israel) in 1973. The highly anticipated debut album Astaganaga was released in 1978 with the hit singles ’Dansa’ and ’Latin Dance’. The use of Latin American rhythms and percussion instruments yielded comparisons to Santana. ’Dansa’ reached #26 in the Dutch Top 40 on 25 November 1978 Watch our great music videos ❯ More TopPop?
