Aiki Ken Happo Giri Old Form – 7th Suburi Version This is a version of the Happo Giri that my teacher Morihiro Saito Sensei taught. It is based on the 7th suburi in our traditional Aiki Ken curriculum. I am doing the old form of happo giri, with the big turn in the first oblique step (the first turn to the angle, after the four-corner cutting sequence). The basic concept is that after each right-side cut/strike, you step forward into left-side hitoemi for the tsuki. This form, like the 6th suburi version of Happo Giri, is very good training for feeling the difference between the hanmi stance and the hitoemi stance. The hanmi stance, at the end of each cut/strike, has the hips engaged strongly. In the hitoemi stance, at the end of each tsuki, we have our hips even more engaged, although not completely sideways.
