Pompeii was destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, along with Herculaneum. The city fell into oblivion for almost 15 centuries, hidden under the remains of the eruption, protected from the elements and from looting. Herculaneum was destroyed like Pompeii. These very well preserved remains have provided a knowledge of the Roman civilization of the 1st century with objects found or frescoes in the houses. Director : Jacques VICHET
