The flooding occurred in the Tista River in Lachen Valley, Sikkim state, due to a “sudden downpour“ over Lhonak Lake in the northern part of the state, the Indian army said in a statement. The downpour is a very sudden and destructive downpour. The water level in the river rose very rapidly, increasing about 15 to 20 feet above normal, the army said, adding that 41 of its vehicles were submerged by the resulting slush. According to a statement from the Sikkim government, five bodies have been recovered. The search and rescue operation is ongoing and three people have been rescued. At least three bridges have collapsed and about 420 people from two districts have been shifted to relief camps, according to the Sikkim government.
