KAESHIWAZA are counter techniques, where an aikido technique is countered by another (or the same) aikido technique. Here are some counters to SHIHONAGE, done rather slowly and then slowed down even more in editing for clarity. Kaeshiwaza is practiced to improve the aikido techniques so that counters become increasingly difficult. Countering is mainly a question of timing and finding the right moment, which is when the other’s evasion turns into trying to take over. Of course, speed is an important ingredient in all the martial arts. Still, I find slow motion fascinating to watch as well as to practice. If you learn to do a technique slowly, you can do it fast. In aikido, the smooth circles and spirals of the techniques become evident in slow motion. I think it’s beautiful.
