Welcome to Ålesund. This west coast city is one of Norway’s most distinctive and easily-recognisable places thanks to its spectacular natural setting and its eye-catching architecture. Read more: Art nouveau touches and a delightful pastel palette grace many of the downtown buildings, while the Sunnmøre Alps provide a dramatic backdrop to this city that’s surrounded by water. As such, it’s perhaps no surprise to learn that the city is a popular cruise ship call, even in the winter. It’s also an important stop on the Norwegian coastal voyage operated by Hurtigruten and Havila. That means there’s always plenty of people in the city for a day looking for things to do.
