The French vocal composer par excellence, Francis Poulenc wrote the main work Un soir de neige in 1944 to texts by the pioneering surrealist Paul Eluard. In this concentrated work he moves the measure of the vocal music's expressive power. Paul Eluard was strongly influenced by his experiences at the front in World War 1, and it's not hard to imagine his gloomy state of mind when reading the chilly poems underlying for Un soir de neige (english: One evening in the snow). And yet the poems contains a quiet beauty in the midst of the existential loneliness.
