Thousands of consultant and junior doctors are taking part in walkouts together for the first time. It is an “awful scenario health leaders have long feared”, Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said. In a letter to Rishi Sunak, the BMA’s consultant leaders suggested that they could call off their strikes in return for a pay rise of about 12 per cent. They pointed to a Scottish government deal with junior doctors worth 12.4 per cent this year and said they were “seeking a pay package for 2023-24 above the level of RPI inflation for the 12 months until April 2023 that ensures our pay is not eroded”. Retail Price Index inflation was an average 11.4 per cent for that year.
