The Wimshurst machine is an electrostatic generator in the same vein of a Van de Graff but predates it by about 45 years. Instead of using a belt to create a static charge it uses contra-rotating disks with metal sectors to create the charge and Leyden jars to store the energy produced. Plans for this machine freely available here:- Part 1 Creating the disks and applying the metal sectors.
