As its name suggests, a sliding dovetail plane can only do one thing. If you don't have one, you might have never missed it. But the sliding dovetail is a really nice joint and I have always wanted to make a wooden specialty plane. So here it is. I made the body from a piece of ash that I found on the firewood pile. Since the relatively sharp edge of the sole would probably wear out quite quickly, I added a piece of steel to protect it. It also looks nice, I think. The iron is made from 1095 carbon steel and I also added a nicker that cuts the fibres in front of the blade for cleaner cross-grain guts. I had a lot of fun making this and although this was my first more complex wooden plane project it ended up working quite nicely. But see for yourself. Please subscribe if you like my videos!
