Polonaise was written in 1794, presumably in the Zalesye estate near Smorgon (now the Grodno region)[1]. One of the most famous polonaises. It is believed that Oginsky wrote this work, leaving the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth after the suppression of the Kosciuszko uprising, in which he took part, by Russian troops.
