On 25 March 1996, Queen Elizabeth II arrived in Poland for a three-day state visit. In this report by ITN's Michael Nicholson, the Queen attended a state banquet held in her honour by President Aleksander Kwaśniewski. The Queen spoke of Britain's support for Poland's application to join the EU and NATO. The following day, the British monarch visited the Umschlagplatz Monument in the centre of Warsaw, a memorial to the more than 300,000 Jews who were deported from the site to Nazi death camps during the Holocaust. She ended the second day of her trip with a walkabout through Warsaw's Old Town where she met some local corgis, an experience which the Queen remarked made her feel “very much at home.“ Prince William, Prince of Wales is today carrying out the second day of his own visit to Poland. 27 years on from the Queen's visit, Poland is now a member of both the EU and NATO.
