Why wasn't Diana technically a real princess? After marrying Prince Charles, Diana Spencer became known as the Princess of Wales. However, she was never technically a real princess, which, for example, Eugenie and Beatrice of York or young Charlotte of Wales are. According to British law, only women born into the royal family are considered real princesses: Margaret, Anne, the Yorks, Charlotte. Diana's title basically just meant she was the wife of a prince. And by rule, she had to be called Princess Charles of Wales (like Princess Michael of Kent, for example). However, Diana's popular popularity was so great that the press simply could not help but separate her from her spouse. Hence the “independent“ title. After the divorce of Diana and Charles in 1996, she no longer had the right to be called HRH Princess. However, journalists continued to write about her as “Princess of Wales“.
