A 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit Nicaragua coinciding with the ongoing eruption of Volcán de Fuego in Guatemala on November 8th 2021. The strong earthquake hit the coast of Nicaragua, South West of Managua, on the evening of November 8th. The impact of the earthquake was felt throughout Central America, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. The earthquake hit at a depth of 35 kilometers, with further aftershocks felt after the initial tremors. At a similar time, new volcanic activity was observed at the Volcán de Fuego volcano, in Guatemala. The volcano has been active for a number of weeks, with increased tectonic activity measured, raising the risk of more dangerous eruptions. Warnings are in place for the surrounding areas due to poor air quality and the risk of ash clouds.
