Richie Benaud, who captained Australia in 28 Tests, was the first player to complete the Test double of 200 wickets and 2,000 runs. Following his distinguished playing career, Benaud turned to journalism and broadcasting with equal success and had the rare distinction of being just as popular in England as he was in his native Australia. In November 2014 Benaud revealed that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer and he died five months later at the age of 84. The then Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott proposed a state funeral, but Benaud's family declined the offer, following his wishes for a private funeral.
