Throughout the Second World War, there were networks of concentration camps which were used by the SS to commit horrific crimes. Camps such as Dachau and Buchenwald saw thousands of prisoners never make it out alive, but the men who were in charge of these sites were notorious in their running of the camps. The Commandants of the concentration camps were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of prisoners, but many of their wives lived sheltered and normal lives and did not know much about the evil work begin done by their husbands. Rudolf Höss for example sheltered his wife Hedwig from the evil of his work at Auschwitz, and when she found out she refused to share his bed. But other wives of Nazi commandants such as Ilse Koch got involved in the brutality of the camps and at Buchenwald, she was known as 'The Witch.'
